The Forest Products Sector (FPS) team, part of IFC’s Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services Department, provides financing to enterprises throughout the FPS value chain, including: (i) forests and plantations, (ii) pulp and paper, (iii) solid and engineered wood products, and (iv) biomass. The team consists of investment staff and industry specialists who are responsible to develop and oversee IFC’ activities in the sector.
We are currently ramping up our FPS activity and are seeking to recruit a Senior Pulp and Paper Industry Specialist with technical skills and experience in the following pulp and paper segments: pulp, paper and paperboard, tissue and hygienic products, and paper-based packaging materials. The Industry Specialist will contribute significantly to our global sector expertise and strategy, knowledge sharing, and market creation and innovation. The Specialist will support investment teams in client relationship, business development, technical and market analysis, and transaction execution in the pulp and paper segments.
Role & Responsibilities:
Be the global Pulp and Paper (P&P) Industry Specialist to provide leading market and technical expertise in the following P&P sub-sectors: pulp, paper and paperboard, tissue and hygienic products, and paper-based packaging materials.
Contribute to IFC's FPS strategy and investment program.
Provide best practice P&P industry and technical advice to IFC management, investment teams, and clients to ensure sound and impactful engagements, and to help address potential problems or risks.
Support global investment and advisory teams throughout the project cycle (eg market analysis, business development, project screening, appraisals, and portfolio supervision) across all P&P sub-sectors.
Conduct due diligence assessing projects’ strengths and weaknesses, provide operational parameters to be built into financial models, assess market and competitive environment, etc.
Participate in investment committee meetings reviewing investment and advisory proposals.
Actively monitor and analyze P&P sector developments and market dynamics.
Support teams on analytical studies, sector- and country-specific strategies.
Help define and contribute substantively to early stage initiatives and market creation activities in the P&P sector.
Lead sector knowledge sharing with IFC’s regional teams and sector counterparts at the World Bank Group.
Represent IFC at conferences and industry events, promote IFC brand and FPS capabilities, and build global relationships with external experts and global / regional P&P clients.
Mentor and coach less-experienced staff and help build talent and grow skill base of staff.
Assist in the selection, briefing and supervision of outside specialist technical consultants engaged in due diligence and advisory services activities.
Be recognized within IFC as an authority in the P&P sector, and participate in World Bank Group wide events and specialist working groups.
8+ years’ experience at the senior operations management level of a P&P sector enterprise with knowledge across several sub-sectors (pulp, paper, packaging, tissue, personal hygiene).
Advanced university degree in forestry, technology, engineering or closely related field.
Deep knowledge of current industry and operating parameters to permit comparative cost analysis and bench-marking, and established credibility as a respected regional or international P&P professional.
Sound business judgment to identify the strengths and weaknesses of P&P sector project investments and to provide precise evaluation of technical, financial, managerial and environmental issues.
Cross-sectoral FPS experience and exposure to marketing, sales, distribution, operations, procurement, engineering, MIS, business development, quality and environmental management.
Successful track record of leading multicultural teams.
Good command of information technology.
Strong team player, with demonstrated capacity for hard work.
Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently, prioritize effectively, and adhere to deadlines while always paying attention to details.
Willingness to undertake extensive international travel.
Excellent communication skills in English; a good command of one or more regional languages (Spanish, French and/or Portuguese) would be an advantage.
