Primary Responsibilities: As a Traffic Engineer, you will be involved in the study, design, and construction administration of a wide variety of transportation projects including roadway, intersection and roundabout, traffic signals, Intelligent Transportation System, bicycle, and pedestrian. Additional work assignments will include traffic signal timing and operational studies, Traffic Impact Analysis studies and private development plan review, roadway illumination and pavement marking design, traffic safety studies, traffic modeling, coordination of on-street parking, Temporary Traffic Control plan review and design, and other traffic engineering work. These duties will be performed under the supervision of the practice leader and City Engineer.

Required Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil, transportation, or traffic engineering or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience working in the traffic engineering field on City, County, or State Department of Transportation projects.
• Experience in ITS, Complete Streets, parking lot, bikeway, and pedestrian route design. 
• Experience using AutoCAD, CIVIL 3D, ArcGIS, Cartegraph, and traffic software including Milestone,Tactics, Crescent Link, and Opticom.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• 5 years of roadway related capital project management.

Licenses or Certifications:

• Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Possession of valid state issued driver’s license or ability to obtain within 2 months and automobile insurance coverage consistent with the City’s requirements.

Core Competencies:

• Traffic Design – Knowledge of principles and practices, and practical application of traffic and transportation engineering, including standards, policies, technical issues and understanding of construction documents.
• Technical Aptitude – Ability to effectively and innovatively work with traffic analysis hardware and software to maximize system performance.
• Design Standard Knowledge – Basic knowledge of the MUTCD, AASHTO Green Book, IDOT, and SUDAS municipal traffic and transportation standards.
• Detail Orientated - Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy.
• Decision Making - Knowledge and ability to apply innovation and engineering judgment in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of traffic design alternatives to infrastructure projects.

• Workload Management - Ability to prioritize multiple and changing work requests to meet project scopes, schedules, budgets, and risks to meet the needs of team members and customers.

• Communication - Ability to effectively communicate information to support organizational objectives, both verbally and in writing, with city staff and stakeholders.
• People-Oriented - Enjoys interacting with people and working on group projects.  Able to form and maintain relationships with co-workers, vendors, contractors, and tenants.
• Entrepreneurial - Enjoys taking on challenges, even if they might fail. Able to work independently and efficiently.
• Learning on the Fly - Learns quickly when facing new problems, continuous learner, open and flexible to change, and enjoys finding creative solutions.

Full Time/Part Time: Full Time/Overtime Exempt

Pay Range: $62,856 - $82,118.  Salary will be commensurate with experience and capabilities. Travel assistance to interview candidates may be offered by the City to those who live outside the area in the form of airfare, hotel, and transportation to and from for the interview.

Work Schedule: Normal city business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The successful candidate will primarily work a day shift, instituting a flex schedule as consistent with salaried positions in a professional work environment. Position requires response to critical situations outside of normal working hours on occasion.

Primary Work Location and Work Environment: City hall is the home office location.  Position duties include working indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions; and frequent travel to assigned project locations to investigate field conditions or trouble shoot technical problems.

Travel: Primarily in-town, except for same day out of town meetings and voluntary paid training.
