Professional Engineer-Traffic Engineering

The Professional Engineer I is a licensed position located in the Traffic Safety & Operations Unit of Region 1 for the Colorado Department of Transportation.  This position serves as the Chief Engineer's representative on CDOT projects.  The Professional Engineer will apply engineering theories, principles, and standards to the design, preparation, and construction of plans and specifications for highway traffic projects.  This position is directly responsible for preparing the advertisement package for signing and striping projects, guardrail projects, intersection improvements, and other projects.

Major duties and responsibilitiesinclude, but are not limited to:

• Develop traffic engineering and construction traffic control plans for region projects of all types;
• Determine if existing and new design highway geometrics must be modified or changed to accommodate the application of effective traffic engineering plans;
• Prepares annual region-wide pavement marking/striping project plan sets and specifications, performing construction cost estimates in Transportation program, and preparing advertisement packages;
• Coordinates with Contractors and the inspection team, and manages task orders;
• Analyzes and evaluate complex design and construction phasing plans to formulate effective traffic engineering strategies; and construction projects developed by consultant engineers to ensure compliance with the feasibility and safety issues;
• Performs safety and operational analyses to determine the recommended improvements to projects to improve safety and operations;
• Designs engineering plans for various HSIP and FASTER projects, utilizing traffic engineering fundamentals, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Standard Specifications, M&S Standards and other accepted procedures and practical aspects of the profession;
• Serves as project manager for the region wide striping project and manages construction projects such as roundabout, signal, striping, intersection improvements, guardrail, etc.;
• Attends meetings as CDOT representative, provide expert testimony, and make traffic safety and operations related recommendations during project meetings from conception through completion;
