Description
The Engineer III, Outfitting, leads collaborative efforts to execute engineering tasks, from system design to ship delivery. Ensures adherence to schedule, budget, safety, and quality. Demonstrates expertise, leadership, and adaptability across diverse projects, emphasizing seamless teamwork and autonomous problem-solving.
Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.
What you'll do
- Collaborate with the VSY Outfit Engineering Manager, Functional Lead, and Outfitting Program Leads to execute assigned tasks.
- Develop technical requirements and create technical purchase specifications.
- Generate system designs, including 2D CAD drawings, 3D modelling, calculations, standards, and reports.
- Conduct 2D/3D design reviews and review Vendor Furnished Information (VFI) for accuracy and compliance with specifications, rules, and regulations.
- Resolve design, integration, and production challenges throughout the project lifecycle.
- Obtain design approval from the client and Classification Society as required.
- Provide support across concept design, basic design, functional design, production design, build, commissioning, vessel delivery, and post-delivery phases.
- Collaborate with different stakeholders to ensure coordination between departments, design accuracy, and integration.
- Support subcontract management processes.
- Specify materials, generate material take-offs, and maintain the Bill of Materials (BOM).
- Supervise and/or mentor other team members.
- Address different design elements, including but not limited to Fire Integrity and Portable Fire Protection, Insulation, and sheathing (Thermal, Acoustic and Fire), Spatial Compartment Arrangements, Coatings and Passive Anodes, Workflow and Ergonomics, Joiner Interior Accommodation Design, and Lifesaving systems.
- Be agile and flexible in working in a fast-paced organization with changing priorities and scope.

The estimated salary for this position is $105,300 - $128,700. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
Requirements
What you'll bring
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or an equivalent field.
- Registered Professional Engineer with a P.Eng designation, demonstrating 5+ years of post-secondary experience in Engineering with a focus on ship/maritime systems.
- Proven leadership and coordination skills, effectively overseeing the work of others.
- Ability to work independently, showing self-initiative without significant oversight.
- Expertise in contributing to the analysis of information, designing engineering solutions, and drafting standards.
- Proficiency in subcontractor management, coordinating work, conducting quality inspections, and overseeing feasibility testing approaches.
- Experience in a diverse project team environment is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical skills for gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing data, ensuring accuracy in collective analysis processes.
- Excellent technical writing skills for producing clear, detailed specifications, procedures, and reports.
- Knowledge of MRP, purchasing, and management systems, with familiarity in CADMATIC, Ship Constructor, Navisworks and AutoCAD software.
- Effective collaboration skills, seamlessly working across multi-disciplined teams.
- Critical thinking ability to analyze change requests, projects, and designs, anticipating schedule or budget risks.
- Capability to work autonomously, providing technical guidance on testing, evaluating, and improving engineering outcomes.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
- Commitment to a high standard of safety, adhering to all safety laws, and complying with employer safety policies and rules.
- Proficient computer skills, including a working knowledge of the basic Microsoft Office software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
