- IT Engineer 1 - Information Security Engineer

POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under moderate supervision, the Information Security Engineer 1 provides basic services to operate and maintain core technical services, according to detailed procedures. The engineer will help to maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of university-wide data and systems. The position supports the operation and monitoring of security controls, responds to incidents, and helps implement cybersecurity policies and best practices across the institution. This role collaborates across campus and provides a foundation for growth in information security engineering within the university.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide basic services to operate and maintain core technical services. Monitor security alerts and logs to identify potential threats, escalate incidents, and support timely remediation to minimize impact. (25%)
Assist in identifying, assessing, and remediating vulnerabilities across systems, applications and endpoint security controls and configurations. (20%)
Support the documentation, communication, and enforcement of security policies, compliance requirements, and risk management practices. Implement engineering configuration, installation, daily operation and maintenance procedures, trouble shoot, document, log, maintain and support security processes. Maintain incident, investigation, and compliance records as needed for audit and assessment. (20%)
Implement and maintain network security configurations as directed. Provide guidance to end-users on security best practices and respond to security-related inquiries. Participate in campus-wide awareness efforts and provide Tier 2 support on security service desk tickets. (15%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCITONS
Engage in regular performance, goal setting and progress review discussions with supervisor. (5%)
Perform identity-based security operations for user account lifecycle management. (5%)
Assist in periodic physical security and access reviews. (5%)
Work on university-wide projects. Participate in security audits, awareness campaigns, and other duties as assigned. (5%)
CONTACTS
Supervisor: Regular contact for review of performance, goals, and progress
UTech Managers & Staff: Frequent interaction to coordinate issue resolution and service delivery.
University Community: Daily contact with faculty, staff, and students to address security needs and provide support.
Student Employees: Regular contact to coordinate or supervise activities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May supervise student employees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience/Education/Licensing: 1 year experience and Associate degree or relevant certification; OR 5 years of experience. Valid driver's license.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Basic understanding of IT and cybersecurity principles (system and/or network administration).
Awareness of risk analysis, incident response, and malware detection.
Working knowledge in at least three areas such as endpoint protection, encryption, vulnerability management, or related domains.
Technical troubleshooting and critical thinking abilities.
Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to interact with technical and non-technical audiences colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team; strong customer service skills.
High ethical standards and demonstrated discretion/confidentiality.
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Typical office and computer lab/data center environments; may require bending, kneeling, and lifting to 45 pounds. May require driving a university vehicle and access to restricted campus areas. Must be available to respond to after-hours security incidents or emergencies as needed.
