Position Overview:
We are seeking a Senior HVDC Apparatus Expert to join our Station Design Department. Under the consultative direction of the Apparatus Quality Control Section Head, act as the Corporation's senior technical authority for HVDC station switchyard apparatus, including converter transformers and other high-value, long-lead equipment critical to HVDC system performance and reliability. Provide enterprise-level technical leadership and direct supervisory oversight of the HVDC Apparatus team, with authority over the specification, procurement, contract administration, and quality assurance of complex HVDC apparatus for Converter Stations and associated AC systems.
Lead the procurement and technical contract management of long-term HVDC apparatus supply agreements valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars, with particular accountability for converter transformer programs, ensuring alignment with system reliability, performance, safety, and lifecycle requirements. Establish technical direction, oversee supplier performance, and resolve complex technical and commercial issues.
Serve as the enterprise authority within Station Design for HVDC station switchyard apparatus specifications, procurement, supplier technical compliance, and lifecycle performance, working in close coordination with Automation & Controls Engineering on functional, control, and system design requirements. Provide authoritative technical guidance across the Corporation, represent Manitoba Hydro with senior vendor and consultant organizations, and contribute to standards, best practices, and risk mitigation for the HVDC Program.
Responsibilities:
- Provide enterprise-level technical authority for HVDC station switchyard apparatus, with primary accountability for converter transformers and other high-value, long-lead HVDC equipment.
- Lead the development and maintenance of HVDC apparatus specifications, standard equipment designs, and procurement strategies in accordance with CSA, ANSI/IEEE, IEC standards and best utility practices.
- Provide enterprise-level technical authority for HVDC station switchyard apparatus, including converter transformers and other high-value, long-lead apparatus.
- Lead the development and maintenance of HVDC apparatus specifications, standard designs, and procurement strategies in accordance with applicable standards and best utility practices.
- Lead the technical procurement and contract governance of HVDC apparatus supply agreements, including converter transformer programs valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
- Direct technical evaluation of tenders, participate in supplier negotiations, and provide recommendations for procurement decisions.
- Provide ongoing technical governance of suppliers, including performance monitoring, non-conformance resolution, and long-term reliability and lifecycle risk management.
- Lead and direct technical reviews including design reviews, drawing approvals, factory and site inspections, audits, and witness testing to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Provide direct supervision and leadership to the HVDC Apparatus team consisting of Professional Engineers, Technical Officers, and/or Technical Assistants, including work planning, prioritization, and performance oversight.
- Direct and coordinate the work of external resources including consultants, manufacturers, and testing agencies engaged in HVDC apparatus work.
- Advise planning, design, operations, and maintenance groups on apparatus selection, application, sparing strategies, and system integration considerations.
- Represent Manitoba Hydro externally with manufacturers, consultants, and industry and standards organizations (e.g., IEEE, CIGRÉ, CEATI), and actively participate in technical committees and working groups to support industry development and maintain awareness of emerging technologies and practices.
Qualifications:
- Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of nine years of progressively responsible experience in utility electrical engineering, including HVDC and AC station apparatus specification, procurement, supplier evaluation, construction, testing, and quality control, with demonstrated supervisory or team leadership experience.
- Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
- Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of HVDC Converter Station switchyard apparatus, particularly converter transformers and other high-value, long-lead equipment.
- Proven experience leading the technical procurement and contract management of large-scale electrical apparatus supply agreements, including long-term contracts with multi-million dollar values.
- Demonstrated ability to act as a senior technical authority and exercise sound engineering judgment on complex, high-risk technical and commercial decisions.
- Demonstrated recognition as an internal expert in HVDC apparatus and/or demonstrated involvement with industry organizations or technical committees is considered an asset.
- In-depth knowledge of applicable CSA, ANSI/IEEE, and IEC standards, procurement practices, construction methods, and testing requirements for HVDC apparatus.
- Thorough working knowledge of Manitoba Hydro's power system, enterprise procurement practices, policies, procedures, and commercial terms.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise, coach, and develop highly skilled engineering and technical staff.
- Proven ability to communicate complex technical and commercial concepts clearly and persuasively to technical specialists, project teams, senior management, and executive stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, manufacturers, and consultants.
- Possess a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $57.62-$78.94 Hourly, $110,417.06-$151,272.42 Annually.
